
This painting was written to celebrate the defeat of the Turks in Santa Maura on August 30, 1502: the victorious papal fleet was led by Jacopo Pesaro, while his cousin Benedetto commanded the Allied Venetian fleet. Because of the awkward brushstrokes, it used to be considered one of the very earliest Titian paintings and dated around 1506.
However, the painting has famous stylistic similarities with the altarpiece in Santa Maria della Salute, which is dated 1510, so Antwerp painting should be given a later date of about 1510 g
