There are two “Lamentations” of Botticelli’s brush, both are magnificent examples of his late style, as well as mastery in creating compositions from closely-placed figures. This “Pieta” was performed for the altar of the church of Santa Marne Maggiore, where she was seen and described by Vasari.
For Botticelli, known for his cool, calm images of the Madonna, this picture is extraordinarily emotional. All actors of the scene, including Joseph of Arimathea, holding a crown of thorns and nails from the Crucifixion, are full of profound experiences.
