Caravaggio has a number of works with images of individual saints. Most often it is St. Francis, St. Jerome and St. John the Baptist.
St. Francis was traditionally portrayed as a praying ascetic, but in Caravaggio’s painting “The Ecstasy of St. Francis” he is shown at the moment of finding the wounds of the Lord on his body. Jerome of Caravaggio is an old man who writes a book, and John the Baptist is a beautiful half-naked young man in the scenery of the desert. Caravaggio painted and images of female saints – for example, “Repentant Magdalene.”
