The work of the Lenin brothers holds a special place in French painting of the 17th century. The main theme of the artists was peasant life. Painters attached to the images of peasants dignity and nobility, consciousness of their own social significance.
With their approach to the peasant theme, as well as in compositional and coloristic terms, the Lenen brothers were more than a hundred years ahead of European painting. They were born in the family of a winemaker from Lana, learned painting from local monastic painters. Quite early the artists left their native city and in the 1630s settled in the suburbs of Paris Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Masters painted portraits, works on mythological themes, paintings for temples.
Despite the origin of the artists, their art was recognized in 1648, and they were accepted into the newly formed Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. In the same year, the older brothers Antoine and Louis died suddenly, and gradually the work of Lenin became associated only with the name of the younger brother Mathieu, and by the end of the XVIII century. turned out to be forgotten. Only after a while the artists were remembered, and their work took a worthy place in the history of art. Among the works of renowned artists is the painting “The Peasant Meal” by Louis Lenen.
