The work was written by the artist in the period when the theme of the life of the Russian village becomes one of the leading ones in Russian painting. Konstantin Makovsky along with other painters is fascinated by peasant scenes. During his trips to the Tver, Tambov, Simbirsk provinces and Ukraine, the artist was impressed by the field work during the harvest.
In a difficult time, the peasants for several weeks moved into the field with their children and belongings. In the work “The Peasant Dinner during the Harvest”, the simple essence of their being – the love of work and the landowner – was conveyed with a simple, uncomplicated plot.
