Painting by the French painter Nicola Lancre “On the Swings”. The size of the painting is 70 x 89 cm, oil on canvas. The artist was an excellent expert, a great connoisseur and connoisseur of painting.
Lancre often visited with his friend the artist Francois Lemoine the mansions of the Parisian nobility, the owners of collections of paintings and collections of fine arts. With special attention and for a long time, sometimes even causing displeasure by noble owners of painting collections, Nicola Lancre considered paintings by old masters of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Gradually, about Lancre a reputation as a subtle and enlightened expert in painting.
One day, a philanthropist wanted to experience Lancre by showing him in the same old frame where the original Rembrandt was previously kept, a magnificent copy of this painting representing the Blessed Virgin and the baby Jesus. Lancre, barely glancing at the canvas, exclaimed: “Where is the original of the painting?”. When the amazed interlocutors asked what he was basing his statement on, the artist said that he immediately noticed several wrong shadows in the folds of clothes on the sleeve of the Virgin Mary; the original, which was soon brought in, confirmed Lancre’s judgment.
