Miracle of St. Eligia by Sandro Botticelli

Miracle of St. Eligia by Sandro Botticelli

One of the five panels written by Botticelli for the altar of the chapel in the monastery of San Marco. It is executed in a lively manner and depicts a saint who was the archbishop of the city of Limoges, forging a horse’s leg. In addition to his divine ministry, St. Eligius was known as a skillful blacksmith who enjoyed the admiration and friendship of the patronizing Dagobert King of Franks.

The rumor about the talents of Eligia resulted from the fact that he was chosen by his patron for blacksmiths and metal carvers, so he is depicted on this panel. The altar was ordered by the jewelers’ shop for the newly reconstructed St. Eligius Chapel in the San Marco Monastery.
