By the time this work was created, the genius of Thepolot had not been doubted by anyone. The painting depicts a collection of Johannites, Maltese knights. The artist managed to convey to the audience a sense of expectation of something important that is about to happen. The knights sitting along the wall are talking about something. One of them held a handkerchief to his face, the other one greets someone from the public.
