Margaret Gachet for the piano by Vincent Van Gogh

Van Gogh conceived a picture of the same size, but in a horizontal format, depicting “Wheat fields: plain Over” as a supplement to this picture. He pictured them to himself as part of a larger, decorative ensemble.

As in Provence, Over Van Gogh again used points, which are such a characteristic feature of Japanese art. In his portrait of Marguerite Gachet, the background is dotted with tiny strokes of apparently Oriental origin.
