Mahomet on Mount Hira by Nikolai Roerich

The synthesis of beauty, truth and goodness, embodied in the “Banners of the East” series, brings together N. Roerich’s artistic ideas and the philosophy of the Unity.

Here, in Asia, everything corresponded to his idea of a possible synthesis of cultures, everything testified to the deep layers and rich interrelations of art, it would seem, of such different peoples. Roerich found examples of the interpenetration of cultures literally at every step, as if constantly dispelling the myth about some kind of isolation of the East, its isolation from the rest of the world.

At the same time, the Roerich-artist was set on fire with the idea of translating the concept of world unity, which is so necessary today, from the researcher’s notebook in the clear and accessible language of art. On this path, he was inspired by the riches of the heart of Asia, so carefully preserved over the centuries and not yet blurred by the modern mechanical civilization. So the idea of creating the series “Banners of the East”.

Painting “Mahomet on Mount Hira”. N. K. Roerich depicted the Prophet on Mount Hira with his back to the viewer, respecting the canons of Islam, which forbids the display of the face of a man. In the book “Altai-Himalayas” the artist writes: “At-Tabari says interestingly about the prophetic vocation of Mahomet.” The first thing that started the revelation of the messenger of God was the suggestions of truth, which came like the morning light. Then he was filled with solitude and remained in a cave on Mount Hira. And here came the eternal True to him. And he said to him: “Mohammed, you are the messenger of God.”
