Portraits of Van Dyck often wrote against the backdrop of landscapes that played an applied role and therefore were not thoroughly studied by the artist. It is more interesting to consider his landscapes – independent works, as, for example, this “Landscape”. Before us, the early landscapes of Van Dyck almost did not reach, but the watercolor and pencil sketches of the artist made in England are known.
These landscapes van Dyck wrote simply for his pleasure in the rare moments of rest. It should be noted that at that time still rarely wrote the nature of watercolors, therefore such works by Van Dyck as the “English landscape”, ca. 1635-41, can be considered innovative. It is from such works that the famous British school of watercolor landscapes has grown.
Van Dyke left behind himself and sketches of individual trees and plants, several types of port town, through which he drove, going to the continent or returning to London.
