Italian painter Alessandro Magnasco studied with his father. He worked mainly in Genoa and Milan, painted pictures on religious and mythological themes, as well as genre works. The art of S. Rose, J. Callot, masters of the Genoese school had a great influence on the artist’s work. Despite this, the painting of Manyasco is filled with individuality, which affects both the manner of writing and the interpretation of images, the development of themes.
The works of the artist are distinguished by the grotesque characteristics, accentuated by contrasting oppositions of light and shadow, as well as the rhythm of compositional decisions. They are combined with a plastic interpretation of figures and objects, based on a special technique of writing, which imparts dynamics to images. So, in the painting “Landing on galleys” chaos and organization perfectly coexist, even a certain rhythmic discipline.
