Katerina by Taras Shevchenko

Taras Shevchenko is not only recognized worldwide writer, but also a remarkable painter. At the beginning of his career he was seen as an artist, and sent to study in Russia.

After writing the poem “Katerina”, according to her story, Shevchenko wrote the same picture. On it, he depicts a scene that goes right after the farewell of the main character – Katerina with her lover. Although the picture describes the actions taking place in the poem, and is an illustration, some researchers talk about it as an independent work with a special set of symbols.

The picture shows a nice-looking girl, she bent her head and walked barefoot, along the dusty road. She is dressed in traditional Ukrainian clothes: a white shirt with a red bow, an ankle skirt, a wreath and a scarlet apron. Her name, judging by the name of the picture, Katerina.

In addition to her, on the same road under the tree a man of about fifty sits with his arms crossed. His swarthy face is hidden under a broad-brimmed hat, only his mustache and black hair are visible.

And one more hero of this picture is a soldier on horseback, which leaves away. The artist wrote his figure a little vaguely, despite the overall detail of the canvas.
