In the work of Murillo, genre scenes with the participation of poor children, which were in great demand among buyers, occupy a large place. These paintings the artist performed in the style of the baroque Flemish and Dutch paintings of the time, possibly influenced by the work he had seen in the homes of the inhabitants of the Flemish colony of Seville.

A puppy looking at the bread is also the protagonist of this scene. As usual in such scenes, Murillo masterfully caught the expression on the faces of the children.
