Holy Family by Marc Chagall

Holy Family by Marc Chagall

This picture – the development of the theme of motherhood and a peculiar variation of the gospel story. In the depiction of evangelical canons, Chagall introduces elements of Jewish interpretation. The Virgin Mary with the infant Christ and the consort Joseph represents the moment of the greatest joy sent by the Lord – the child in the family.

The family scene appears in the immovable stasis of images, reminiscent of Russian lubok. Therefore, it can be considered fulfilled in neo-primitivist stylistics. At the same time, figures seem to be carved from a stone in a very low relief, almost flat. Arrived in Paris, Chagall inspired by the ideas of the manifesto “On Cubism”, sought to convey in his work the spirit of the times.

The painting had the second name “Family”.
