The peak in creating portraits of the master reached after the creation of the work “The Gross Clinic”, described by critics as one of the greatest portraits ever created in America.
On the canvas, a famous Philadelphia surgeon, Samuel D. Gross, runs the operation at the Jefferson Medical College. The unusual lighting and heroic image of the doctor, reflecting the discipline of modern surgery, did not help the picture to get to the exhibition in 1876. The commission rejected the canvas on the basis of excess blood.
