Friedrich first saw the mountains, being very young, in 1810. Since then they have become a frequent motif of his landscapes, a symbol of the heights of knowledge and spiritual life.
Several pines on the rocky peaks remind us of eternal life. But on the way to it you need to overcome the gorge, swirling with fog, – the abyss of sin, into which a person risks falling every minute of his earthly path.
