This is the first of the artist’s canvases dedicated to significant dates in the history of the Commonwealth and its victories over the states that subsequently divided Poland.
In the picture, the artist depicted the self-esteem of King Stephen Batory, who received Russian ambassadors after the battle of the Great Bows.
This painting was greeted with unusually favorable reviews and was exhibited in Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Lviv and Paris in 1874. At the same time, the French Academy took Yana Mateiko among its honorary members.
