The work of the Czech modernist Alphonse Maria Mucha “Autumn” is included in the series of works “The Seasons”. The technique in which it is made is not related to painting in the traditional sense. This is a flat color print in which the master loved to work. The picture of the picture resembles a book illustration, and the heroine herself, the woman – Autumn, is one of the representatives of the “Fly Woman”, as a visiting card of the artist’s work. The work is intertwined with seasonal features of the fall. This is a ruby paint, and brick sand, and the color of fading greenery, and rich marshy shade.
The imprint of sadness from the overflying summer is erased by the presence of a woman. Her image represents fertility and prosperity. The harvest has been gathered, and the bunches of grapes will soon turn into thick wine. She collects dense ink berries in a ceramic dish. The silence and tranquility of the autumn evening disposes to the spectator’s own pacification. The composition of “Autumn” is simple. Mucha chose a winning front with the main character and did not dwell on the complexity of the far. The symbolic vine and wooden pegs are rarely spelled out, and the sand, or the earth, serves as the throne of the mature Autumn. The blurred edges of the further composition are chained to the center of the work.
Masterly possession of the technique allows Alfonso Maria to play with details and color, to convey her thoughts, painted as if from the notes of the famous Vivaldi. The author found a solution in filling the voids of the heavens. He interlaced grape threads with stylized floral patterns. This is where his mastery of the illustrator and poster artist affected. Receptions of the modernist direction shout with smooth lines and a complete rejection of angles and straight lines. All contours, even brightly expressed, flow one into another, completing the overall picture.
Contrasting shadows and warm light allude to sunlight. A piece of luminary still clings to the fabric of clothing and delicate skin. A woman is not poor and not rich. A modest decoration in the Byzantine style more than a modest spot adorns a thin neck. Even dry asters in a virgin’s hair appear richer and more refined. The dress is simple and unpretentious, it is a cotton canvas, thin and flowing. Everything harmoniously fits into a good and generous picture of the earthly autumn – calm, fading, but, in its own way, beautiful.
