Artist’s Workshop by Adrian van Ostade

Artists Workshop by Adrian van Ostade

Adrian van Ostade – the famous Dutch master of the peasant genre, a great etcher and painter. He studied in Haarlem under F. Hulse, was greatly influenced by the work of his friend in the workshop of A. Brouwer. Ostade departed from the image of J. van Goyen and S. Reisdal in the 1630s from the image of coarse grotesque tavern scenes.

This acquaintance prompted the artist to turn to the landscape genre and etching, and under the influence of Rembrandt’s art, the artist’s painting acquired a calm, brownish-golden tone. The grotesqueness of domestic scenes was replaced by good humor. The overall tone of the paintings has become peaceful.

The painting “Artist’s Workshop” on the subject stands apart from other works by Adrian van Ostade, but its compositional and coloristic solution is close to that in other genre paintings of the artist, and the warmth with which the work is performed makes it one of the best works in the master.
