Order for the altar image for the Church of Sant’Agostino in San Sepolcro Piero della Francesca received in 1454. Work on it lasted until 1469. In its original form, the image did not reach us – it was destroyed in the XVI or XVII century, and it left only a few fragments, which are now stored in different museums. The central image panel has been completely lost, but several side panels have been found and restored.
Above you see the panel in St. Lisbon with the depiction of St. Augustine, and on the next page – the panel with the archangel Michael. In addition, there is a panel on which an unknown saint is depicted. Art critics tend to believe that this is either the apostle Simon or John the Theologian. This mysterious panel belongs to the Frick Collection.
