For two trips to India, Vereshchagin managed to write a series of paintings, devoting them to the culture, nature and way of life of its peoples. Vereshchagin realistically conveys in his image national dresses, architectural buildings, monuments and many other small things that attract attention.
One of his plans was to create a series of paintings telling how the British conquered India, but, unfortunately, the idea failed, and instead of a series of paintings, the artist drew only a few canvases, one of which was a canvas called “Suppression of the Indian Uprising Englishmen “, created in 1884.
The picture depicts the moment of execution, the British killed Indian peasants who rebelled against the colonialists. All this cruel procedure takes place on a sunny day. We see that the bright sun is shining and the sky is brightly blue and clean. The foreground is occupied by guns, next to them are the military. The Indians, who are sentenced to the death penalty, we see that they are tied to the trunks of these cannons. One can only assume that after the gun fires, the Indian body will be torn to pieces.
I noticed that the treasury was mostly sentenced to elderly people, those who worked all their lives. We can only guess that they are scared, in appearance they look strong, those whom death can not break. For their people, they are undoubtedly heroes.
The uniqueness of these paintings is that the artist in his painting pays particular attention to the smallest details, for example the shape of the English. I, of course, like the creativity of this artist. They are imbued with the spirit of history, make us learn about the event, which is depicted on the canvas, present it, and comprehend.
