Renato Guttuso is one of the largest masters of the 20th century. Usually his name is associated with the direction of neo-realism in the visual arts. The artist was born in Bagheria near Palermo. The first skills in art he received in the workshop of an artisan who was engaged in the painting of carts.
In 1938, Guttuso became the founder of the magazine “Corrente” and the same-name group of artists-antifascists. The struggle against fascism took an important place in the life and work of the artist. In 1946 Guttuso initiated the creation of the “New Front of Art”, which united antifascist artists of different creative styles.
Artistic manner and worldview Guttuso formed under the strong influence of expressionism, close to the temperamental nature of the artist, as well as the study of the art of Picasso, Cubism, works of such major masters of the XIX century as Delacroix, Goya, Gericault, Daumier.
The painting “Crucifixion” is one of the most famous works of the artist. The master did not accidentally at that moment turned to this topic and chose exactly the solution of the plot, which projected on modern events related to the assertion of the fascist dictatorship in Europe.
