Requiem by Victor Chernovolenko

The artistic creativity of Victor Chernovolenko is closely connected with his musical creativity. Not knowing the notes, but possessing a phenomenal hearing, he could improvise for hours at the piano, combining the artist and the composer in one person. Often after showing the audience his works, the artist sat down at the piano and began to improvise.

“Requiem” – the last picture of Victor Chernovolenko – is a kind of embodiment of the music of spheres in color. It is compositionally divided into two unequal parts in a zigzag semi-circle. The top is a blue-blue space with luminous golden dots, connected by the finest lines. In the center – a transparent, light curtain, woven of dotted lines of golden color. It hardly touches the dense part of the semicircle; at the very top of the picture a somewhat elongated golden sickle of the moon glows… Harmony and serenity of boundlessness descends from the world of the unaffected stars; invisible crystal bells ringing in the universe.

In the second part of the picture, beyond the curve of a twisting arc, another world opens, a world of music, rhythm and life of a different dimension. Here everything is different: the colors, the configurations of dense strata, the crystals of fire, the crooked golden lines, piercing the upper layer and piercing the crystals of flames… The music of the spheres is powerful. Chords and melodies are unique. They fill everything around. In the flow and rhythm of the sound, notes are reminiscent of the artist’s intended departure from the earthly plane.

The painting “Requiem” became his “swan song”. On the sixteenth day of October one thousand nine hundred and seventy-two at seven o’clock in the morning he departed from the earthly plane.
