The portrait may have been commissioned by P. M. Tretyakov. After the composer’s death, his portrait was commissioned by the artist A. G. Goravsky.
Obviously, Tretyakov, who was not satisfied with this work, could have ordered the execution of a portrait of A. S. Dargomyzhsky, KE Makovsky. The portrait is made from a photograph. 1869 includes the first orders of portraits of figures of Russian culture, which marked the beginning of the famous portrait gallery of P. M. Tretyakov.
