Painting of the French painter Nicolas Lancre “Old Age”. The size of the painting is 34.5 x 45 cm, oil on canvas. The young girl on the left rejects the love advances and pretensions of the lustful old man. Another old man in the center of the picture, stroking the dog with the usual hand movement, is immersed in his thoughts or memories of the past.
Two elderly women in the right side of the picture, one sleeping and the other rotating the spindle, do not wish to pay any attention to those around them. The sitting figures of old men depicted by Lancre may have been painted based on the peasant scenes and genre paintings of artists, the brothers Le Nen. The painting “Old Age” is the last canvas in a series of four Lancre canvases, which represent the four ages of human life – “Childhood”, “Youth”, “Maturity” and “Old Age”.
