Melancholy and the mystery of the street by Giorgio de Chirico

“Melancholy and the mystery of the street” is the most famous work not only de Chirico, but also the whole trend in art, called “metaphysical painting.” The picture was studied more than once by art historians, many explanations were introduced later by the author himself. The painting is visually divided into two parts – a sunlit square with an arcade and a hidden shadow, a foreground with the same arcade.

The main role here is also shared by two hypostases – heroes in the form of a girl running behind a hoop and a formidable shadow to which the girl rushed, as well as the very deserted city landscape depicted in various isometric projections. The history of studying this picture by experts is a vivid example, when people want to find a hidden deep meaning that the author did not lay down at all. For many years it was discussed that the shadow to which the girl runs is nothing but a man carrying danger and an extreme degree of aggression.

De Chirico himself explained that this is just a shadow from a statue that is not visible to the viewer. Much controversy has caused and opened the door of the van, hidden in the shadow of the building. Some believe that the story is hidden here: this is the childish prank of the heroine of the picture, while others are sure that the image of the open doors of the van was dictated only by compositional requirements. In general, everything in this picture is subordinated to the creation of a harmonious harmonious composition, and for this purpose the author is not afraid to destroy the laws of projection and space and to bring controversial points into the plot.
