The images of saints Murillo had to be addressed throughout the course of his entire creative career. Below reproduced the relatively early work of the master “Mary Magdalene”, then – later “The Martyrdom of the Apostle Andrew.” , completed by the master shortly before death. These paintings are very different from each other. And the point here is not so much in the picturesque features, but in the disclosure of the topic itself.
The later religious paintings of Murillo with the saints are much more dramatic than his similar canvases of the 1640s, 1650s, and early 1660s. Yes, in The Martyrdom of St. Andrew, drama is imposed by the situation itself. We note, however, that young Murillo did not have much love for such situations. He preferred to depict visions or acts of saints. In the 1670s, he takes on completely new subjects that are not characteristic of him.
In addition to the “Martyrdom of St. Andrew” cited here, such works as “The Flagellation of Christ”, “The Crucifixion”, “Saint Francis Embracing Christ” can be called. But even in more “peaceful compositions” or “The Mercy of Elizabeth of Hungary”) restrained tragic notes appear, still Muriljo, who tied a bow in the hair of an angel, not at all peculiar.
