Lizanka and Dashenka by Vladimir Borovikovsky

Borovikovsky perfectly mastered the technique of miniature painting: especially it is felt in the very fine modeling of the face depicted. The figure is easily and naturally entered in a circle, the lines are combined in a soft rhythm. Close to the miniatures in nature were small portraits, painted with oil paints on metal plates, cardboard or wood.

Borovikovsky worked a lot in this genre, in which he wrote a chamber portrait of young girls – Lizanka and Dashenka. The girls are dressed and brushed in fashion, which was in the noble circle. Liza and Dasha – courtyard girls of Prince Lvov, excellent dancers.

Before us is an idyllic, somewhat mannered image of two young graceful girls, clinging to each other with a feeling of “pure and tender friendship,” which was often sung by poets of that time. This mood is emphasized by light colors, harmonious, musical rhythm of lines, and fine modeling of faces, and a soft pictorial manner.
