In the 1880s – 1890s, Makovsky often turned to Russian history in the 17th century, writing a whole series of lush “boyar feasts” and “weddings.” Due to the abundance of domestic details, the antique beauty of the surroundings, the “noble” colors brought into unity by a common golden tone, these works enjoyed unchanging success, both in Russia and at international exhibitions.
