Hagar in the desert by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo

Hagar in the desert by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo

Hagar – Egyptian, slave, servant of Sarah during her childlessness, who became a concubine to her husband Abraham and gave birth to him the son of Ishmael. When Isaac, the son of Abraham from Sarah, began to grow up, Hagar and Ishmael were persecuted by Sarah at the insistence of Abraham. Hagar went to the south, settled in the Arabian desert, where Ishmael became the ancestor of the Arab tribes, called Israelis and Hagaris.

As the mother of Ishmael, traditionally considered the progenitor of the Arabs, Hagar occupies an important place in the Arab traditions.
