Konstantin Egorovich Makovsky is a representative of one of the most curious artistic clans of the XlX century. Growing up in an atmosphere of art, the young man chose the path of the painter.
Konstantin Makovsky, in contrast to his older brother, Vladimir – the artist-the Wanderer, with his work represents an alternative line of painting – her “salon” version. Alien to the acute social problems of the time, he devoted his creative work to the epoch of Russia of the 17th century, in which he was attracted by the entourage of the painted royal chambers, the splendor embroidered with gold and pearls of dresses.
Being, in the words of contemporaries, “a man – orchestra”, “bonvivanom” and a dandy, Makovsky enlisted the support of high society, the whole Russian nobility dreamed of being imprinted by the maestro, and the members of the royal family called him “their artist.” In the “Family Portrait” the painter depicted his wife – Yulia Pavlovna Letkova with children – Sergey and Elena.
Makovsky, with his inherent pictorial aesthetics, tries to reward his heroes with a greater appeal. The workshop, in which the portrait was painted, fully conveys the atmosphere of luxury and the love of the owners of the house to beautiful objects.
