Après des voyages le long de la côte normande entrepris par Monet en 1882-1883, le tableau “Falaises d’Etretat” est créé.
L’artiste n’a cessé de chercher de nouvelles techniques de peinture, et dans ce travail il a utilisé un coup de pinceau en relief – une technique qui permet de transmettre les reflets à la surface de la mer, les vibrations subtiles des rayons du soleil, provoquant une sensation de chaleur, une atmosphère transparente de nuages.
La transmission des éléments éphémères à évolution rapide est renforcée par leur contraste avec la statique des roches, dont les contours ont des formes complexes.
L’œuvre est conservée au Musée Pouchkine des Beaux-Arts de Moscou.
