Construction of the Exchange on the project of Thomas de Thomon lasted from 1804 to 1810. At the same time, a special commission headed by A. D. Zakharov, author of the Admiralty, decided the architectural design of the whole Spit of Vasilyevsky Island: with a beautiful square, Rostral beacon columns and a granite ramp – a semicircular descent to the Neva.
Unfinished by the time of engraving the ensemble Patersen is depicted according to the projects. When Pushkin arrived in St. Petersburg in 1811, the Exchange already became the architectural center of the Spit of Vasilyevsky Island and the busiest place of the port city.
