Finding the relics of St. Hubert [1440] The canvas Discovering the relics of St. Hubert came from the studio of Rogier van der Weyden around 1440. On it we see how the priests inside the sun-drenched Gothic church take out the imperishable relics of the Holy One from the newly opened grave: the artist reproduces in his work the famous legend of the Christian Middle Ages.
The realistic depiction of the clothes of the central characters is simply amazing. Van der Weyden gave the relics of St. Hubert the look of a sleeping man, not a dead man. He is in the scarlet bishop’s dress and miter. The temple is full of people, here and monks, and clergymen, and rich parishioners in luxurious clothes.
Surprisingly, this picture seems larger than its size and much more monumental. The polyphony of images and architectural details depicted on it makes it an interesting work of Dutch masters of the middle of the XV century.
