According to art-biographer master – Gian Pietro Bellori, this work was commissioned by the family of di Franco, for the chapel of Saint Domenico Maggiore.
This family is connected with the customers of the Seven acts of mercy, which Caravaggio also wrote for the church, all in the same 1607 year.
