In all its incomparable splendor Paris is nocturnal. The infidel lights are flashing and dislodging, infidel lights flash, the motley crowds are flashing, the motley crowds are flowing ceaselessly… Eternal, incessant, exciting life of the soul… And how in Russian bursts into this fairy firework the intonation of sadness, fatigue, “loneliness in the crowd”! .
The author feels himself in the midst of this fairy-tale glee not so much as an enthusiastic participant, but as an admiring viewer who will admire him, enjoy this brilliant performance and will go to his home, to his distant, soothing silence.
