The artistic range of Konstantin Alekseyevich Korovin is extremely wide. At the beginning of his creative career, he is fond of the traditions of the Wanderers, then in Paris he gets acquainted with impressionism, later studies symbolism – that is why his work is so diverse and diverse.
The picture “Arctic Ocean, Murmansk” was the result of an incredibly interesting expedition to the far north of Russia, to which Mamontov spurred it. The trip took place at the end of the summer of 1894 – Korovin, along with his closest friend and like-minded Serov, set off across the vast northern expanses. Impressions from this region resulted in a number of works, which art historians call “northern”.
In the rays of the dawn sun, cold and alien waves of the icy ocean pour out, playing with freakish colors and creating an infinitely beautiful space that amazes the viewer’s imagination. The enormous merit of the “northern” works in general and this picture in particular, is that they discovered and established the dominance of a unique noble range of gray, ashy and pearly tones.
