View of the Palace Embankment from the Peter and Paul Fortress by Fedor Alekseev

The largest representative of landscape painting of the beginning of the XIX century, F. Ya. Alekseeva called “Russian Canaletto” in honor of the Italian artist, master of the urban landscape of the XVII century.

“View of the Palace Embankment from the Peter and Paul Fortress” – one of the most famous works of the painter. The panorama of the Palace Embankment of St. Petersburg is majestic and monumental. Above the naked in the granite Neva towers the buildings, reflected in the mirror-smooth surface of the water, over the boat gliding along the river – the high sky.

In the foreground on the left is the wall of the Peter and Paul Fortress, in the far right, on the banks of the Neva, – the Marble Palace with the service building. To the left of it is the house of Baryatinsky princes and the palace of Rear Admiral H. de Ribas, then the Summer Garden, recognized by its forged fence. For the work “View of the Palace Embankment from the Peter and Paul Fortress” Alekseev received the title of academician.
