Transformation by Sandro Botticelli

Botticelli made the figure of Christ, accompanied – not completely canonically – by Moses and dressed in goat skins by the prophet Elisha, the center of a small triptych, depicting below the three apostles, James, Peter and John, in poses resembling the disciples of Christ in the “Prayer for the Cup.”

The side panels depict the Saints Jerome and Augustine, the two great teachers of the Church, the old and venerable figures of which contrast with the youthful appearance of Christ. Although the leaves are separated from the middle part, their painting enters the composition of the whole: the heads of the saints form a triangle crowned by the head of Jesus.
