The Mill by Rembrandt Harmens Van Rhine

The Mill by Rembrandt Harmens Van Rhine

Painting by the Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn “The Mill”. The size of the landscape picture is 88 x 106 cm, oil on canvas. Seven years after the death of Saskia, conducted by Rembrandt with Geertye Dirks, are characterized by a decrease in creative activity and, at the same time, a concentration on calmer topics.

It is noteworthy that in the painting of Rembrandt of 1645-1646, the motif of the holy family is repeated at least five times. During this period, the number of custom portraits decreases, the artist pays great attention to images of simple folk types, deepens the new version of “Danae”.

There is still interest in the expressive heads of old people. In landscape painting and graphics from 1640-1641, Rembrandt’s realistic exploration of the Dutch landscape, with its space, light and buildings, begins in Rebrandt.

The creative development of these years culminates in the first artistic embodiment of the humanity of the environment, standing below the mainstream burghers – in the painting “Christ in Emmaus” and in the engravings of the same year with the images of beggars; at the same time the “List in one hundred guilders” appeared, which illuminates the real contradictions of reality by the strict, demanding decisiveness of the meaning of the main message of Christianity.
