The interrupted betrothal by Adrian Markovich Volkov

The interrupted betrothal by Adrian Markovich Volkov

The plot of the picture is common: at the time of the betrothal of a young man who wants to improve his financial situation by marrying a merchant’s daughter, a young woman with a young child, once seduced and abandoned by this young man, appears in the doorway.

Note that the picture of A. Volkov, condemning the immorality of one person, was rather coldly received by the Council of the Academy, although it found a hot response in the broad circles of Russian society. And yet, for the painting “Interrupted betrothal” in 1860, Volkov receives the Gold Medal, however, in the nomination “distinguished in expression.”
