Still Life with Three Puppies by Paul Gauguin

Still Life with Three Puppies by Paul Gauguin

The picture was created during Gauguin’s stay in Brittany. It was an innovative work – a vertical canvas on which the composition unfolds from the top down, contrary to all the laws adopted. Lapping puppies, glasses, fruit, located at the edge of the table – the last detail was clearly inspired by the pictures of Cezanne – all these elements are arranged “lines”.

Each graphic series is written in its own way, – the Cezanne fruit is written in volume, “in a Cézanne manner”. Puppies and wine glasses are painted flat, with clearly outlined contours, in the eastern, Japanese manner. In the upper part of the still life resembles arabesque or decorative panel.
