Sleepy Youth by Lucien Freud

A picture of an English artist “Sleepy Youth” depicts a sleeping young woman. From the beginning of the 1950s, Lucien Freud began to paint portraits and nudes, applying a thick layer of dense layers of paint. He writes portraits of people, mostly from his environment – friends, acquaintances, mistresses, relatives.

The painting “Sleepy Youth” refers to the early period of the artist’s work. Freud never tried to embellish the model, although he claimed that he “draws people not as they are, but what they could become.” What he means by these words, he knows, probably only himself. “In our understanding, this means better, more beautiful, more perfect. In Freud, the sleeping girl does not look perfectly beautiful, but natural – no doubt. Healthy sleep of a young organism.
