Roger and Angelique by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres

Roger and Angelique by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres

The plot of the picture is drawn from the poem by L. Ariosto “Frenzied Roland”. It describes the story of Angelica, chained to the rock and sacrificed to a sea monster. Her rescued knight Roger, flew to the rescue on a mythical animal, which was a “mixture” of a horse and an eagle. Ingres takes the most dramatic moment of this story, but the figures are written “extra emotionally” and look frozen. We again encounter the almost deliberate attachment of the artist to Mannerism, which is necessary to them “modernized”.

The heroes of the painting, as if carved from cardboard, are placed by the author against the background of an extremely simplistic fantastic landscape. Engra here, first of all, takes a contrast. On its creation, in particular, it works that Roger is clad in gold armor, and Angelica stands at the rock naked. Attention is drawn to the “play” of patterns that cover the entire surface of the canvas. Closure of the artistic space is emphasized by the diagonal of the spear of Roger, which seems to unite all elements of the composition.
