Rinaldo and Armida are a pair of lovers from the Italian epic poem “Liberated Jerusalem” by Tasso.. This is the story of the first crusade that ended with the seizure of Jerusalem in 1099. and the establishment of the Christian kingdom. Armida, a beautiful witch-maiden, was sent by Satan to crush the crusaders by the power of her spells. She sought revenge for Rinaldo for saving his comrades, whom she turned into monsters.

But the hatred of Armida turned into a love for a handsome young man. In the picture the lovers sit in the bosom of nature, next to the columns. Before them is a mirror in which each of them sees his own image at the moment of love – he is burning with passion, she is proud of her power over him.
