Return from the market by Adolf Bugero

Adolf Bugero – a French artist of the 19th century, painted paintings on mythological, historical, biblical and allegorical subjects. He is the largest representative of salon academicism, and an artist who made a great contribution to the beginning of the formation of academic painting. His work had a direct impact on artists working in the style of classicism.

In the picture “Return from the Market” a young beautiful girl is depicted, with a lovely little face that turns around and smiles at the viewer. This is a village returning from the market. She carries a knapsack on her shoulder with a dove attached to her paws. Most likely it’s a postal dove, and the girl is preparing to send someone a letter.

The girl has a good mood and we can assume that the letter is meant for her lover, and she is eager to get home with enthusiasm. The color of the picture is represented by warm shades. The dark background of the picture, characteristic of salon academicism, makes the figure of the heroine bright and cheerful. The head of the girl is covered with a golden cape, gently flowing down the beautiful folds. Bouguereau created many sketches, before writing the final version of his paintings and took into account all the smallest details, so the picture looks very naturalistic.

The painting is perfect for an interior in a classic style. It is chambered, small in size, and so it can decorate even a small room. She will delight the eye with her beauty, unpretentious plot and suggest thoughts of a wonderful feeling of love.
