On the road. The death of a migrant by Sergey Ivanov

One of the final paintings of the cycle is “On the road. The death of a migrant “is the most powerful work of the planned series. Other works on this subject, created earlier and later by a number of writers and artists, did not reveal the tragedy of immigrants so deeply and at the same time in all its terrible truth.

Heat-sated steppe. A light haze extinguishes the horizon line. Unlimited this seems to be a sun-scorched desert land. Here is a lone, displaced family. Evidently, the last extreme made her stop at this bare place, unprotected from the scorching sunlight.

The head of the family died, the breadwinner. What awaits the unfortunate mother and daughter in the future – this question involuntarily sets itself to anyone when looking at the picture. And the answer is clear. It is read in the prostrate mother figure on the bare earth. There are no words and no tears in the heartbroken woman.

In mute despair, she scratches the dry earth with her crooked fingers. The same answer we read in the face, blackened, as if extinct, in the girl’s face, in her frozen, horror-eyed eyes, in her numb, exhausted figure. There is no hope for any help!

But in fact quite recently the life hovered in a small transport house. The fire was cracking, a meager dinner was being prepared, the landlady was bustling beside the fire. The whole family dreamed that somewhere far away, in an unknown, blessed land, a new, happy life would soon begin for her.

Now everything collapsed. The chief worker died, apparently, the fallen and exhausted horse. They no longer need a yoke and an arc: they are casually thrown around the cart. The fire in the hearth was gone. The tumbled bucket, the bare sticks of an empty tripod, stretched out like arms, in a dull melancholy empty shafts – how hopelessly all this is sad and tragic!
