Oath in the ballroom by Jacques Louis David

Oath in the ballroom by Jacques Louis David

Despite his vigor, David paid much attention to the creation of preparatory drawings. He spared no time, searching and practicing each figure on paper, every detail of the future picture. Very often, the pose and face of the character, David wrote separately: first sketched a nude figure in the workshop, and then gave the facial features a portrait resemblance.

Study of preparatory drawings for the paintings “Coronation”, 1805-07, “Horatius Oath”, 1784 and “Oath in the ballroom” shows that they have always been thorough, carefully worked out, even in the case of multi-figure compositions. This is confirmed by the unfinished canvas “Oath in the Ballroom”. Before leaving the work, David made a detailed sketch of nude nature and wrote several heads.
