Kiss of Judas by Giotto di Bondone

Kiss of Judas by Giotto di Bondone

One of the most famous paintings of the Paduan cycle – “Kiss of Judas” – tells of a duel of good and evil, nobility and baseness. Against the background of the blue sky, among the fluttering copies and torches, Christ and Judas embracing him are depicted in profile. They look into each other’s eyes.

The Savior with the face of impeccable, almost antique beauty is contrasted with the low-browed, ugly Judas. He betrayed Teacher: by kissing Christ, he helped the guard to identify him in the darkness of the night and grab it. Giotto reaches here the unknown psychological depth.
